| Washi is very different
from western paper. To see what is involved in making it, and how the
process yields such an exquisite product, come listen to our lecture,
and/or attend our workshop to make washi yourself. You will be able to
learn the eye-opening secrets of washi and washi-making through the
guidance of our expert instructor. Course Content: ･ Lecture: In the lecture, Mr. Denhoed will introduce the basics of the papermaking process as well as the variations in the process that bring about the variety in the finished papers, and how Japanese paper differs from that of other cultures/regions. He will also talk about how he himself came to be interested and involved in washi. He will bring several kinds of washi so that you can see and touch them and feel closer to the world of washi. ･ Full-day workshop: In the full-day workshop, you will have a chance to go through the process of papermaking, including all the steps of fibre preparation, sheet-forming, pressing, and drying (weather permitting). Sufficient time for you to practice the sheet-forming process is built in to the class structure. There will be a brief lecture, including explanation of the papermaking process, washi's place in Japanese culture, and some of the historical and contemporary uses of washi. This class is aimed at individuals who are looking for a more thorough introduction to the process of making washi, and extended time to work at improving their technique. Participants will finish with at least 10 sheets of paper each. It will be possible to make sheets of approximately A3 size and postcard size. Natural materials, coloured pulps, and paper pieces will be available for incorporating into your paper creations. ***Please note that the paper you make will need to be pressed and dried; depending on the weather, this may take more time than we have available. For this reason, the finished paper may need to be sent to you by post - this may take from 2-4 days. Class Schedule: ･ Lecture: Saturday May 14 10:00-12:00 ･ Beginners' workshop: Sunday, May 22, 10:00-16:00 ･ Intermediate workshop: Sunday, May 29, 13:00-17:00 Instructor: Mr. Paul Denhoed Mr. Denhoed completed graduate studies in Design, Papermaking, and Bookmaking at the University of Iowa in 2001. In 2002, he received a Monbukagakusho scholarship to study Papermaking in Japan. He has been in Japan ever since, researching various aspects of washi and washi culture, having visited more than 50 papermaking studios across the country. For the past two years, he has been employed at the Oguni Washi Papermaking Studio in Oguni, Niigata (http://www.oguniwashi.jp/). | 西洋紙と大きく異なる和紙—その和紙がどのような工程を経て作られ、この上なく優れた紙となるのか、和紙専門家によるレクチャー、ワークショップを通して学んでいただけたらと思います。きっと、和紙の世界に秘められた力を感じていただけることと思います。 コース内容： ・レクチャー： レクチャーでは、和紙作りの工程の基本はもちろん、その工程の多様性が和紙の仕上がりにどういった違いをもたらすか、また和紙は、他の文化圏の紙とどう異 なるのかについても紹介します。また、講師自身がそもそもどのようにして和紙に興味を持ち、和紙の世界に引き込まれていったかについてもお話しします。当 日は、色々な和紙のサンプルを用意しますので、是非見て触っていただき、和紙をより身近に感じていただければと思います。 ・ワークショップ： ワー クショップでは、和紙作りの工程を、繊維の準備から紙漉き、脱水、また天候が許せば、乾燥まで学びます。特に、紙漉きには、十分な練習がきちんとできるよ う多くの時間を取ります。また、和紙づくりの工程、日本文化における和紙の位置づけ、和紙の伝統的利用法並びに現代的活用法についても簡単な説明をしま す。このワークショップは、和紙作りの工程をより深く知り、かつ和紙作りの技法を学びたいという方に最適で、少なくとも１０枚の和紙（A3サイズと葉書サ イズ）作りに挑戦していただけます。紙には、葉 や花びらなどの素材、色のついた繊維、紙片などを入れ込んで、様々なオリジナル和紙を作ることもできます。 （備考：漉いた和紙は、脱水と乾燥が必要ですが、天候によっては、当日できない場合もあるので、その場合は、２−４日後に郵送にてお届けします。） 春期日程： レクチャー： ５月１４日（土）１０時〜１２時 初心者ワークショップ： ５月２２日（日）１０時〜１６時 経験者ワークショップ： ５月２９日（日）１３時〜１７時 講師：カナダ人和紙アーティスト、ポール・デンホード先生 ２００１ 年にアイオワ大学にて、デザイン、紙作り、本作りの修士課程を修了。翌年、文部科学省の奨学金を受け、紙作りを学ぶために来日。以後日本に在住しながら、 日本全国の５０以上もの和紙工房を訪れ、和紙、和紙文化の研究を続ける。過去二年は、新潟県にある小国和紙生産組合 （http://www.oguniwashi.jp/)にて本格的な和紙作りに励む。 |
Mr. Denhoed: Japanese paper (washi) is a fascinating material; although the basic process is the same, paper made by hand in each locality of Japan bears distinct characteristics. Through the 1300 year history of washi, the Japanese have conceived an infinite array of papers for an unending variety of applications: screens, wall-coverings, lamps, and much, much more. Gaining an understanding of how washi is made and used affords a certain insight toward Japanese culture itself. Getting your hands wet and trying your hand at actually making washi yourself is not terribly difficult, and it's a lot of fun! |  |
